With proper care, koi can live a long time—typically 20 to 30 years, though some have been known to live over 50 years.
Their lifespan depends largely on water quality, diet, and pond conditions. Keeping your water clean and offering high-quality food like Saki-Hikari will go a long way in ensuring your koi live to their full potential.
Koi need a balanced diet to thrive, and choosing the right food is key to keeping them healthy and vibrant. We recommend Saki-Hikari koi food, as it’s specially formulated for optimal growth, color enhancement, and immune system support.
For year-round health, start with Saki-Hikari Multi-Season. During warmer months, switch to Saki-Hikari Growth to promote size and vitality. When the temperature drops, the Hikari Wheat Germ formula is perfect for easy digestion. Providing the right food ensures your koi develop beautiful colors and live long, healthy lives.
Acclimating your koi properly helps prevent shock and stress. When your new koi arrive, float the bag in your pond for about 20-30 minutes to let the water temperature equalise. Next, open the bag and slowly add small amounts of your pond water to the bag every 5-10 minutes for about an hour. After this, gently release the koi into the pond. This method helps them adjust to the pond's temperature and water chemistry gradually.
Yes, quarantining new koi is highly recommended to avoid introducing high levels of stress to the pond. Set up a separate quarantine tank or pond for at least 2 to 4 weeks where you can monitor the new fish. During this time, feed them a high-quality, easily digestible food like Saki-Hikari Wheat Germ to support their immune system as they adjust to their new environment.
The size of koi you purchase depends on your pond size and what kind of growth you’re aiming for. Smaller koi (around 4-6 inches) will grow quickly if kept in good conditions, while larger koi (over 10 inches) are more established and hardier, making them easier to care for. For a well-balanced pond, we recommend starting with koi that are at least 6-8 inches. Feeding them premium food like Saki-Hikari Growth will help them reach their full size and beauty.
