Doitsu Ochiba have smooth, scaleless skin and a soft mix of grey and bronze colours. They’ve got a calm, natural look and are a great choice if you want something more subtle but still unique.
With no scaling to soften the finish, selection is centred on skin quality and pattern control. Any inconsistency is immediately visible on Doitsu, so only koi with clean skin and even colour distribution are included. The bronze pattern is assessed for how it sits across the body, avoiding fish where it breaks or clusters unnaturally.
Base colour stability is also a key factor. We prioritise koi where the grey tone holds depth and doesn’t wash out as the fish grows, maintaining contrast over time. This ensures the pattern remains defined rather than fading into the body.
Body conformation is selected with growth in mind. Each fish is chosen for structure that will support development, maintaining proportion and presence rather than flattening out.
This is a variety where subtlety works best when it’s done well. The focus here is on clean, balanced Doitsu Ochiba that will hold their look as they mature.
