Otsuka is a mixed-variety farm with good quality across the board. Known for Kujaku, Shusui, and other Hikari Moyo types.

Selection from Otsuka focuses on consistency across metallic and patterned varieties, with particular attention paid to how hikari (lustre) interacts with underlying pattern. In varieties like Kujaku, we prioritise koi where the reticulation remains visible beneath the metallic finish, maintaining definition rather than becoming washed out.

Skin quality is a key driver in selection. Metallic koi from Otsuka are assessed for even, uninterrupted shine across the body, avoiding dull patches or inconsistency that can break the overall finish. This is especially important in lighter varieties, where any imbalance becomes more visible over time.

Pattern placement is considered in the context of the body, not in isolation. We focus on koi that carry balance from head through to tail, ensuring the pattern holds as the fish grows rather than becoming compressed or uneven.

Body conformation is selected with development in mind. Preference is given to koi with the frame to support growth while maintaining proportion and presence in the pond.
