Doitsu Kohaku are a scaleless version of the classic Kohaku, with the same white base and red pattern but a smooth, clean finish. The lack of scales gives the colours a sharper, more direct look. What you see is exactly what you get.
Selection follows the same principles as standard Kohaku, but the scaleless finish makes precision non-negotiable. Shiroji must be pure white with no yellowing or blemish, as any imperfection is far more visible without scaling.
Hi quality is assessed for depth and clean edges. The red needs to sit sharply against the white base without bleeding or fading. Uneven colour that might be partially masked by scaling in a standard Kohaku will show plainly on a Doitsu.
Pattern balance is a key focus, with preference given to koi where the hi flows well across the body from head to tail.
Body conformation is selected to support development, ensuring the koi maintains structure and proportion as it grows.
This is a variety that rewards clean, careful selection. The focus here is on Doitsu Kohaku that hold their quality as they mature.
