Can Koi be kept with other fish?
Yes, koi can be kept with other fish, but it’s important to choose compatible species. Koi generally do well with larger, non-aggressive fish like goldfish and some varieties of pond fish. Avoid smaller, delicate fish that koi might see as food or more aggressive species that could stress or injure your koi.
How are the koi shipped safely?
We take extra care to ensure your koi arrive healthy and stress-free. Each fish is carefully double bagged with fresh packing water, oxygen and placed in a sturdy shipping box, and shipped overnight via DX our licensed couriers.
We ship Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursdays for next day delivery, ensuring the safest journey for your koi.
How fast do koi grow?
Koi grow at varying rates depending on their environment, diet, and genetics. On average, koi can grow about 10-20cm per year in basic ponds, where as some koi can grow 30-40cm a year in a higher quality ponds especially if they’re fed high-quality food like Saki-Hikari Growth. This is depending on the variety and care they receive.
What are the different types of Koi available?
Koi come in a wide variety of types and patterns. Some of the most popular varieties include Kohaku (white with red markings), Showa (black with red and white), Sanke (white with red and black), and Asagi (blue-grey with red underbelly). We offer a range of types, so you can find koi that suit your pond and aesthetic preferences.
What do I do if my Koi looks stressed after shipping?
If your koi appears stressed after shipping, give them time to adjust. Float the sealed bag in your pond for 20-30 minutes to let them acclimate to the water temperature. Gradually add small amounts of pond water to the bag before gently releasing them. It’s normal for koi to be a little lethargic at first. Monitor them closely and avoid feeding for the first 24 hours to reduce stress.
Ensure the water parameters are correct, minimise handling, and provide a calm environment. Stressed Koi often recover after a few days. The health of our fish is important to us, so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns upon receipt of your Koi.
What should I look for in a reputable Koi dealer?
A reputable koi dealer should have a strong track record, healthy fish, and transparent practices. Look for a dealer who prioritises the health of their koi, offers proper care advice, and has good customer reviews. Ideally, they should also have strong ties to Japanese breeders and an understanding of koi genetics. Trust your instincts — if the fish or facilities don’t look right, it’s best to look elsewhere.
What water conditions are best for Koi?
Koi thrive in water with a pH between 7.0 and 8.5, and temperatures around 65-75°F. It’s important to maintain high water quality, with zero ammonia and nitrites and low nitrate levels. Stable water parameters and good filtration are key. Regular testing of pH, ammonia, and other water quality factors is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment for your koi.
